Ingredients
Red gram dal : ¼ cup
Cut Greens : 1 cup
Onion : 1
Tomato : 2
Tamarind : a small ball
Turmeric powder : ¼ tsp
Salt : to taste
For Seasoning
Mustard : 1 tsp
Asafoetida : ¼ tsp
Black gram dal : 2 tsp
Oil : 1 tsp
To Grind
Dried red chilli : 6
Coriander seeds : 2 tsp
Chana dal : 2 tsp
Grated coconut : 1 tsp
Oil : 2 tsp
Method
Cut onion and tomato into small pieces.
Roast the items for grinding in oil and powder.
Add a cup of water to the tamarind ball, extract juice and strain.
Take the red gram dal in a bowl, add turmeric powder and cook.
When cooked, add greens.
Add onion, tomato and ½ cup water to the greens and cook.
When the greens are cooked, add salt, strained tamarind juice and let it boil for 5 minutes.
Add the ground powder to the above and boil for 5 minutes.
Take oil in a frying pan add the seasoning ingredients and when the mustard splutters add to the cooked greens, boil for a minute and remove from fire.
P.S. Greens like Agathi keerai, arai keerai and drumstick leaves are good for this saambhar.
